MELAKA: Umno’s election committee has cancelled the election of Rais Yasin as head of the Tangga Batu division because of irregularities during the election, which was held at a hotel.
Rais had defeated the incumbent Ali Mohamad by only four votes after obtaining 282 votes to Ali’s 278.
The division’s secretary, Abdul Latip Mohamad, said he received notification on the matter through a letter from the central leadership.
“The letter said after a study was conducted on the election, the 2023 Umno elections committee ruled that the election of Rais Yatin as the Tangga Batu division head is invalid.
“Accordingly, the division needs to hold a re-election for the post,” he said when contacted here.
Rais, who is assemblyman for Paya Rumput, was recently appointed Melaka Umno liaison committee deputy chairman by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
