Soon Huat-Shevon advance to final of Swiss Open, Zii Jia falters

Mixed doubles pair are the only Malaysians left in the Basel tournament.

KUALA LUMPUR:
National mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie qualified for the final of the 2023 Swiss Open in Basel when they overcame their Dutch opponents early this morning (Malaysian time).

However, singles ace Lee Zii Jia failed in his bid to win his first title this season when he lost 11-21, 14-21 to Japan’s Koki Watanabe, Bernama reported.

Soon Huat-Shevon, seeded sixth, won in straight games 21-14, 23-21 against Robin Tabeling-Selena Piek in 38 minutes.

The Malaysians, ranked 11th in the world, will meet China’s Jiang Zheng Bang-Wei Ya Xin. who defeated Taiwan’s Ye Hong Wei-Lee Chia Hsin 21-13, 23-21 in the other semi-final.

Zii Jia’s loss followed his semi-final defeat in the All England championships to China’s Shi Yuqi on March 18.

Earlier, national men’s doubles pair Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi also failed to advance to the final of the Swiss Open when they went down 19-21, 21-17, 17-21 to Indian pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in a 69-minute semi-final encounter.
