Lift curfew, allow students to work part-time, says Syed Saddiq

The Muar MP says there are undergraduates who are small-scale entrepreneurs.

Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman said bureaucracy in public and private universities is preventing students from working outside the campus.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Bureaucracy in universities should not prevent students from doing businesses and part-time jobs off-campus grounds, an MP told the Dewan Rakyat today.

Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar) said universities should not impose curfews to prevent students from carrying out such activities.

He called on the entrepreneur development and cooperatives ministry and the higher education ministry to work together to make sure bureaucratic practices do not affect students.

“There are universities that have imposed curfews, despite the fact that these students are adults and they have shown evidence that they have businesses and part-time jobs outside the campus,” he said during the debate on the 2023 Supply Bill today.

“I hope that these students, who are small-scale entrepreneurs and part-time workers, will be exempted from the bureaucracy in both public and private universities as long as they can show proof.”

He said the government should foster an entrepreneurial culture among university students from their undergraduate years.
