KUALA LUMPUR:
Youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh has given a statement to police regarding a programme under her ministry which had been accused of being a mode of “Christian evangelism”.

Yeoh said she came immediately to provide her statement after reading that the police were planning to question her.

“I decided to come today to give my fullest cooperation to the police in their investigation.

“I did not want to waste time,” she told reporters outside the Sentul district police headquarters (IPD) here.

Yeoh went on to say that a line had to be drawn when it came to political attacks, saying it should not threaten the country’s harmony.

Last week, Yeoh’s aide lodged a police report against Badrul Hisham Shaharin, better known as Chegubard, after the latter linked Impact Malaysia, a non-profit organisation under the ministry, to Christian evangelism.

Impact Malaysia had organised a visit to a church in Klang as part of its “Jom Ziarah” initiative aimed at fostering a better understanding among youth of different faiths.

Badrul subsequently lodged a police report against Yeoh, accusing her of proselytising Christianity to Muslim youth through the programme, as it was carried out by the agency under her ministry.

Yeoh later revealed that Muslims were barred from the said programme.

On Saturday, Impact Malaysia said the church visit had been cancelled. It added any programme to visit different houses of worship will no longer be carried out by the youth and sports ministry.

Police are also investigating Badrul for criminal defamation. It was reported earlier today that Badrul had provided his statement.

Sentul police chief Beh Eng Lai said the police had recorded statements from three people – the complainant and two representatives of the NGO – to help in the investigation.
