“We have reached RM2.25 million. Please do not donate any further. I sincerely thank you for supporting justice and standing with me,” Lim said in a Facebook post today.
The DAP MP said the money raised will be audited by a licensed auditor to ensure “transparency and accountability”.
On March 16, Lim lost a defamation lawsuit, filed by businesswoman Jessy Lai and her company, MonSpace (M) Sdn Bhd, in 2017.
Lai said Lim’s statements had tarnished her reputation and that of her company by claiming that she was running an illegal business and had cheated Chinese investors.
Justice Akhtar Tahir said Lim had gone beyond his duty as an MP when making accusations about Lai and her company.
Lim was ordered to pay general damages of RM500,000 to Lai and RM1 million to MonSpace.
He was also ordered to pay them another RM500,000 in aggravated damages.
The quantum of damages is believed to be the highest awarded in a defamation case over the last 20 years.
Lim launched a crowdfunding campaign the next day, saying that if he was unable to pay the damages, he risked being declared a bankrupt and disqualified as an MP.
