Asyraf said Akmal had managed to garner the votes of 102 divisions so far, passing the 96 needed to win the post. Umno has a total of 191 divisions.
His rivals for the post were Paya Besar MP and former deputy finance minister Shahar Abdullah, senator Arman Azha Abu Hanifah and Meor Hassan Mat Ali.
Akmal represents Merlimau in the Melaka state assembly and is a state executive councillor for health and anti-drugs. He is also the deputy head of Melaka Umno Youth.
The post of national Youth leader fell vacant when Asyraf decided not to seek re-election. He had been appointed Umno Youth chief in 2018 after the fall of the Barisan Nasional government.
