Cops begin probe into controversial ‘Mentega Terbang’ movie

Bukit Aman secretary Noorsiah Saaduddin says eight reports have been lodged nationwide.

‘Mentega Terbang’, which touches on the differences and similarities of the major religions in Malaysia, has drawn criticism from the public as well as artistes following its release on Viu last month.
PETALING JAYA:
Police have begun their investigation into the locally produced independent film “Mentega Terbang” for religious provocation.

Bukit Aman secretary Noorsiah Saaduddin said police received eight reports against the film, lodged nationwide, Bernama reported.

Noorsiah said the investigation was being carried out by their classified crime investigation unit.

“The case is being investigated,” she was quoted as saying.

News of the police investigation comes two days after the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission said streaming service platform Viu had pulled down the movie.

“Mentega Terbang”, which touches on the differences and similarities of the major religions in Malaysia, has drawn criticism from the public as well as artistes. The movie was first released online in 2021.

On Thursday, religious affairs minister Na’im Mokhtar said Jakim had reviewed the film’s content and found that it went against the Islamic creed.

A scene depicting the movie’s main character, Aisyah, wanting to eat pork went viral, along with a scene where the character’s father allows her to leave Islam and convert to a different religion.

These scenes courted anger on social media, with netizens questioning how the movie was allowed for public viewing.

The film stars Syumaila Salihin, Firdaus Karim, Nik Waheeda, Arjun Thanaraju, Khairunazwan Rodzy, Shyamala Kandapper and Jesebel Lee.
