PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan Youth will be meeting higher education minister Khaled Nordin to discuss abolishing the controversial Universities and University Colleges Act (Auku) 1971.

Deputy DAP Youth chief Young Syefura Othman reiterated that repealing the Act was a pledge that PH Youth had made during the 15th general election (GE15), saying they remained committed to their manifesto.

Last week, Khaled said the government had no plans to repeal Auku as it was still applicable for administration purposes in universities.

“PH Youth will meet the higher education minister soon to discuss this issue,” said Young Syefura in a statement today.

The Bentong MP also said she had joined deputy youth and sports minister Adam Adli and Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii to meet Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul over the formation of a bipartisan young MPs parliamentary caucus.

She said the formation of such a caucus would be good since GE15 saw many young MPs elected, while serving as a platform to discuss and champion issues involving youths.

“I hope that this bipartisan caucus will be joined by young MPs from both sides of the divide,” she said.

Former education minister Maszlee Malik had previously said a working committee for the abolition of Auku had been formed and tasked with preparing a draft for a new Act to combine both Auku and the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act.

However, this fell apart after the PH government collapsed in February 2020. His successor, Noraini Ahmad, was reported to have said that there was no need to replace the two Acts.
