MELAKA:
A cafe operator who is also a municipal councillor was fined RM3,000, or four months’ jail in default, by the Ayer Keroh magistrates’ court here for selling liquor without a licence.

Magistrate Sharda Shienha Suleiman meted out the fine on M Thiruselvan, 40, who pleaded guilty to a charge of violating the conditions of his business licence by selling liquor without a permit at Taman Padang Balang in Batu Berendam at about 3.15am on Sept 15 last year.

Thiruselvan was charged with violating Section 11(2) of the Entertainment and Places of Entertainment Enactment 2001, which provides for a maximum fine of RM10,000 or up to two years in prison or both, if convicted.

Requesting for a heavier punishment, deputy public prosecutor Fiqri Hakim Zamri told the court that prior to this, Thiruselvan had been fined RM2,000 for operating his business beyond permitted trading hours.

Thiruselvan was represented by lawyer K Shashi.
