PUTRAJAYA:
Forty-two tonnes of humanitarian aid from Malaysia meant for earthquake victims in Syria arrived at the Aleppo International Airport on Friday.

The foreign affairs ministry, in a statement, said the aid will be distributed by the Syrian Red Cross and International Committee of the Red Cross.

The aid, delivered through the cooperation of Malaysia and the government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), includes four generators, medications, tents, carpets, indoor separators, personal protective equipment, clothing, blankets, baby needs and ready-to-eat food.

“The aid is to fulfil the urgent need of the earthquake victims based on the evaluation report by the recce team from Malaysia that met with representatives of the Syrian government and related parties from Feb 15-19,” he said.

The aid was delivered using two special flights operated by the Malaysian armed forces using the A400M and a plane chartered from the UAE Red Crescent.

On Wednesday, a 110kVA generator was provided to Syria through the help of the recce team, headed by deputy secretary-general for bilateral affairs Norman Muhamad and the Malaysian embassy in Beirut, Lebanon.

On Feb 6, two quakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 on the Richter scale hit Turkey and Syria. Nearly 50,000 were killed, 46,000 of them in Turkey.
