No need for RCI into Batang Kali landslide, says minister

Special functions minister Armizan Ali says existing technical agencies are capable of conducting a forensic probe into the tragedy.

The landslide at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite in January claimed 31 lives while 61 people were rescued.
PETALING JAYA:
There is no need for a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into the Batang Kali landslide that led to the death of 31 people, said special functions minister Armizan Ali.

In a written parliamentary reply, Armizan said existing technical agencies under the inter-agency slope management committee were capable of conducting a forensic probe into the tragedy.

He said these agencies would determine the cause of the landslide and suggest mitigative measures.

Armizan was responding to Lim Lip Eng (PH-Kepong), who had asked if the government felt there was a need to set up an RCI to investigate the landslide.

Last month, the government said a full report on the incident was still in the works while a preliminary report had already been read by the prime minister.

The early morning incident on Dec 16 last year claimed the lives of 31 people, including 13 children.

Another 61 people who were trapped in the landslide were pulled out safely during the search and rescue operation at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite.

Activist and former MP Kua Kia Soong and environmental group Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM) had called for an RCI into the incident in view of the number of fatalities.
