KUALA LUMPUR:
History teachers in government schools will not influence the political views of students when teaching about elections, says deputy education minister Lim Hui Ying.

Lim told the Dewan Rakyat the teachers were trained to be objective and to have integrity so as to not attempt to influence their students into having a certain political leaning.

“The ministry has faith in the teachers. In the teaching and learning of History, the teachers’ duties are to teach whatever topics, including elections, objectively.

“Our teachers have been trained to practise integrity and be objective in their thinking.

“There is no way they can influence students in terms of their political views,” she said.

She was responding to a supplementary question from Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai), who asked what steps would be taken by the government to ensure teachers do not take advantage of the teaching of elections under History to influence their students to vote for a particular party.
