Researcher says sorry over ‘claim’ MACC attempted to bribe Wan Saiful

Shafiq Abdul Halim says he was commenting on rumours and accused cybertroopers of editing his video to make it look like he had made such an allegation.

Wan Saiful Wan Jan claimed trial to accepting a bribe of RM6.9 million in relation to the Jana Wibawa initiative.
PETALING JAYA:
A freelance researcher for Wan Saiful Wan Jan has apologised to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission over a claim that it had offered a significant sum to the Bersatu information chief to implicate Muhyiddin Yassin in a graft case.

Shafiq Abdul Halim said he had “misspoken” when commenting on rumours that the anti-graft agency had offered Wan Saiful RM10 million to tweak his statement to the authorities.

He also claimed that he had made it clear to the reporter who contacted him that it was merely a rumour and that he wanted to confirm the matter with Wan Saiful.

“I had no intention of accusing anyone, including Tan Sri Azam Baki,” he said in a Facebook post, referring to the MACC chief.

Shafiq also alleged that the TikTok video where he made the claim had been edited by cybertroopers from Pakatan Harapan to make it look like he had accused MACC of offering money to Wan Saiful.

Earlier this evening Azam slammed Shafiq’s claim, calling it a “wild allegation” levelled against the commission.

He also threatened to take legal action.

Wan Saiful claimed trial earlier to accepting a bribe of RM6.9 million in relation to the Jana Wibawa initiative.

He was also charged with soliciting an unspecified amount for a road project worth RM232 million linked to the programme.

When contacted, Azam said the MACC would proceed with lodging a police report despite Shafiq’s apology.
