KUALA LUMPUR:
The government is considering extending the validity of driving licences to 10 years from the current five years, says transport minister Loke Siew Fook.

Loke said his ministry was also considering offering discounts to those who renewed their licences for 10 years in a move to encourage the public to renew them for longer periods.

“The transport ministry’s officers have been instructed to study the feasibility of this proposal,” he said during his ministry’s winding up speech in the Dewan Rakyat.

Currently, driving licences are allowed to be renewed for a maximum period of five years.

On Feb 10, Loke said the ministry intended to digitise the road transport department’s (JPJ) services, particularly for motor vehicle licences and driving licences.

Loke said digital driving licences would not be mandatory and that a physical licence could still be obtained from the road transport department.

Physical driving licences are still required for foreigners, those on probation, as well as those who hold vocational licences and international driving permits.

He had also announced that private vehicles owned by Malaysians no longer have to display their motor vehicle licences, commonly referred to as road tax.

Last Tuesday, he said the ministry had yet to decide on whether to permanently do away with physical driving licences as it could not force people to go digital.

Loke said the ministry would take a step-by-step approach on the matter.

He said today that the transport ministry was also conducting a study on restructuring the current road tax system to reduce its cost.
