In a letter of demand, Anwar demanded Awang retract his remarks and promise not to repeat the allegation in the future, or the PKR president will take the PAS man to court.
Anwar is also seeking damages from Awang for tarnishing his reputation, giving the latter three days to respond to the letter of demand.
In the letter filed by Messrs SN Nair & Partners, Anwar contended that Awang’s remarks were malicious, untrue, defamatory and slanderous.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini quoted Awang as accusing Anwar of “being more vindictive” than Mahathir, in response to the corruption charges against Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan.
He also questioned why there were no other charges over the controversial littoral combat ship (LCS) project, which involved deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who was the defence minister when the project was first approved.
Anwar said Awang’s remarks insinuated that he abused his power as prime minister and finance minister, while intervening in the affairs of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and enforcement agencies.
The Tambun MP also said it gave the impression that he was vengeful, not ethical or principled, and was not a good Muslim who respected the Federal Constitution.
“As an MP, (Awang) should be more careful when making statements that are untrue, slanderous and not backed by any evidence. His actions have left our client with no choice but to initiate this action to preserve his reputation.
“If our client does not receive any satisfactory response in three days from receiving this notice, legal action will be initiated against you (Awang),” said the letter.
