Motorcycle ferries can ease Second Link congestion, says expert

A public transport expert has suggested that motorcycle ferries be used to ease traffic congestion at the Second Link between Johor and Singapore.

Rosli Azad Khan said motorcycles formed the highest number of vehicle crossings daily across the six-lane Second Link bridge from Tanjung Kupang, Johor, to Tuas, Singapore.

He supported a proposal by Johor menteri besar Onn Ghazi for a ferry service between Puteri Harbour and Tuas to ease traffic congestion at the bridge.

Rosli said that the link accommodates up to 200,000 vehicles daily.

“The ferry service could be designed to carry motorcycles and possibly a limited number of cars, as motorcycles form the highest number of vehicle crossings daily. Workers in Johor will not have to travel all the way to the Causeway in order to cross to Singapore,” Rosli told FMT.

He also suggested six more landing points for ferry services. These could be between: Tanjung Langsat and Changi Point; Pasir Gudang and Punggol; Masai and Sembawang; Stulang and Woodlands; Danga and Kranji; and Taman Laguna and Lim Chu Kang.

He said ferries would be a low-cost way to reduce the time wasted waiting in traffic.

Malaysian Public Transport Users Association chairman Ajit Johl said the federal and state government should also accelerate the Rapid Transit System project from Bukit Chagar to Woodlands.

It is designed to serve about 10,000 passengers per hour each way, easing pressure on the Causeway, and is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2026.

“If they can speed it up, it can lead to greater traffic flow from both countries,” said Ajit.
