SHAH ALAM:
An Umno division leader claimed trial before the sessions court here today to charges of allegedly misappropriating RM440,000 and using forged documents.

Azahari Shaari, the party’s Shah Alam division leader, was slapped with three misappropriation charges under Section 403 of the Penal Code.

Azahari faces two charges of misappropriating RM240,000 (RM120,000 each) from Persatuan Belia Bersatu Teguh Shah Alam by using funds allocated for the organisation’s Hari Raya Haji events in September 2017.

He is also alleged to have misappropriated RM200,000 from another organisation, Persatuan Belia Kampung Kuantan Utara, and used the funds to organise an event for orphans in the same month.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of between six months and five years, whipping and a fine for each offence.

He also faces three other charges under Section 471 of the Penal Code for allegedly using forged documents of the two organisations. The offences are said to have taken place on May 19, 2010.

If convicted, he faces up to two years in jail and a fine for each offence.

Deputy public prosecutor Allan Suman Pillai urged the court to impose a bail of RM100,000.

Azahari’s lawyer, Ashok Kandiah, however, said the sum sought by the prosecution was excessive.

Ashok said Azahari had given full cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) during its one-year investigation into the matter.

Sessions court judge Rozilah Salleh set bail at RM80,000 with two sureties and ordered Azahari to surrender his passport to the court pending disposal of his trial.

The court set April 13 for next mention.
