CSOs pushing for 2018 reform report to be released

The Institutional Reforms Committee's report serves as the foundation for a better government and must be made public without any delay, says group.

The people deserve a transparent, accountable and responsive government, says civil society coalition CSO Platform for Reform.
PETALING JAYA:
A coalition of 100 civil society organisations (CSOs) has called for the Institutional Reforms Committee’s (IRC) 2018 report to be made public.

CSO Platform for Reform said the previous governments’ lack of progress in implementing reforms has severely impacted its transparency, accountability and governance.

In the report, the IRC, which was set up by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government, made numerous recommendations involving the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Sedition Act, the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma), police misconduct, the death penalty, and other issues.

“With accessibility to the IRC report, the public will be able to make informed decisions in pushing for reforms,” the group said in a statement today.

“The people deserve a transparent, accountable and responsive government.”

The group also said it had a meeting with Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul recently and was pleased to receive his support for its various recommendations.

The recommendations include the use of the Public Services Commission (PSC) to decentralise power and enhance accountability through the establishment of inclusive and cross-party parliamentary select committees and the Parliament Services Act.

Last month, former Bar Council president Ambiga Sreenevasan called for the release of the report after warning that urgent reforms face the risk of being derailed by another Sheraton Move, referring to the event that led to the collapse of the PH government in 2020.
