PETALING JAYA: Uncouth MPs, beware. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul has plans to enforce fines of up to RM1,000 or more on MPs uttering racist or sexist remarks or anything deemed contemptuous.
Johari said in a media interview that the fine would be based on existing rules, but a higher fine was on the cards.
Johari is also looking into setting up a select committee to oversee the conduct of MPs. The committee could issue guidelines on what would be deemed offensive.
However, no one had ever been fined under the Houses of Parliament (Privileges and Powers) Act 1952.
“MPs can be referred to the rights and privileges committee and face a suspension of up to six months,” he told Berita Harian.
Parliament will be convened on Feb 13, with the Dewan Rakyat to sit from Feb 14 to March 30.
