Malaysia to print, distribute 1mil copies of Quran

The prime minister says this is the only way to fight back the 'insane and impudent' act of a Swedish politician who burned a copy of the holy book.

PUTRAJAYA:
Malaysia will print and distribute one million copies of the Quran throughout the world as a response to the burning of the holy book by a Swedish far-right politician during a demonstration in Stockholm last week.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said this is the only way to fight back the “insane and impudent” act by Rasmus Paludan.

“We are determined, God willing, to print and distribute a million copies of the Quran to the whole world in a short time,” he told reporters after visiting the Nasyrul Quran Complex here today.

Anwar said Putrajaya will contact other Islamic countries to coordinate the distribution of the copies of the Quran more effectively.

He said the government will follow it up with a programme dedicated to understanding and appreciating the Quran, complete with clear messages and pamphlets.

Yesterday, about 1,000 people marched to the Swedish embassy from the As-Syakirin KLCC mosque after Friday prayers to protest the Swedish government’s lack of response against Paludan’s action.

According to an Arabic news outlet, Paludan said the demonstration was held to oppose Islam and the Turkish president’s attempt to control free speech in Sweden.

The incident last Saturday sparked outrage among Muslims worldwide.

Wisma Putra summoned the charge d’affaires of the Swedish embassy in Kuala Lumpur over the matter.
