PETALING JAYA:
A nurse and a housewife pleaded not guilty at the Ipoh sessions court today to trafficking a nine-day-old baby.

According to Berita Harian, Noor Azlina Nasir, 41, a nurse based in Kedah, and housewife D Murugamal, 52, made the plea after the charge was read to them in front of Justice Norashima Khalid.

The duo were jointly charged with the intention of trafficking the baby girl on the afternoon of June 18, 2020, at the car park of a private hospital in Manjung, Perak.

They were charged under Section 14 of the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007 and Section 34 of the Penal Code.

If convicted, they can be sentenced to life imprisonment or a jail term of not less than five years and whipping.

The prosecution is led by deputy public prosecutor Evangelin Simon Silvaraj, while both accused are represented by lawyer Firdaus Faruq.

Evangelin applied for a bail of RM15,000 for each of the accused, but Firdaus pleaded for a lower bail, citing Noor Azlina and Murugamal’s attendance in court after previously being released on bail.

He also asked the court to take Murugamal’s poor health into account.

The court set bail at RM10,000 and fixed Feb 24 for next mention.
