PETALING JAYA:
The weight of public opinion is bearing down on a pot bellied police corporal shown in a video clip making its rounds.

Some social media users have poked fun at his girth while others questioned if overweight policemen would be able to catch crooks.

The comments were made by Twitter users about a 45-second TikTok video clip posted on Saturday which is being widely shared on social media. It shows a corporal getting out of a patrol car and giving advice to a young man on road safety.

Several Twitter users pointed out that he seemed to have difficulty getting out of the car, while another said crooks would have gone far away before he even got out of his car.

A Twitter user “floralia” said policemen should remain fit until they retire, and should be role models to the youth.

Another user called “Pooh Bear” said there was a need for policemen to control their weight, adding that his company will check their employees body mass index (BMI) once every three months.

“Being overweight will affect KPI,” he tweeted, referring to the key performance indicator.

Twitter user Afiq Azni posed a question to the ministry of home affairs under minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail whether any effort was being made to restore the minimum standards for the physical condition of uniformed services.

However another Twitter user, Keshvin Sidhu, urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim
to give guidelines to the police force on how to keep as fit as himself. He said Anwar looked young and fit, belying his actual age.

One who identified as “Endless” said action should be taken against obese policemen while another suggested that members of the police should undergo a physical test every year.

“We need to ensure that there are no obese policemen, otherwise how are they to nab criminals,” said user “MaT”.

In 2016, the inspector-general of police then, Khalid Abu Bakar, said policemen who did not meet their BMI requirements would not be confirmed, or be promoted.

He also announced then that the police will expand its Trim & Fit programme to ensure that members of the force are in optimum physical shape.
