Exempt tax on bonuses for private sector workers, too, urges MTUC

PETALING JAYA:
The government should allow tax exemption on bonuses given to workers in the private sector similar to the one announced for civil servants to avoid practising double standards, says the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC).

MTUC secretary-general Kamarul Baharin Mansor said this in response to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s recent announcement on exempting tax on the special financial aid for government servants given out earlier this week.

Commending the government for understanding the plight of civil servants, Kamarul said similar consideration should also be given to those toiling in the private sector.

“MTUC sees this matter (tax exemption for private sector workers) as a small gesture but it will have a big positive impact on the workers.

“There will then be no claims of double standards practised by the government,” Berita Harian quoted him as saying.

He said the tax exemption would allow the workers to spend their money wisely and help boost the economy in the process.
