PETALING JAYA:
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has announced toll exemptions on Friday and Saturday in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

“Good news … the transport and works ministers (Loke Siew Fook and Alexander Nanta Linggi) has taken the initiative to hold discussions with toll concession companies, and they have agreed not to have toll charges on 20th and 21st,” said Anwar at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting today.

Chinese New Year falls on Sunday.

Noting that Malaysians from all walks of life will be using the upcoming festive season to travel, Anwar advised them to drive carefully and abide by the road safety rules.

Loke had said yesterday that 2,000 road transport department (JPJ) enforcement officers will be deployed for operations and road safety campaigns in conjunction with Chinese New Year.

He also said seven traffic offences will be non-compoundable throughout the festive season, and that those caught committing the offences will be brought to court instead of being fined.

The seven offences are cutting queue, overtaking on double lines, disobeying the red light signal, driving over the speed limit, using mobile phones while driving, not wearing a seat belt or helmet, and driving on the emergency lane.

Separately, Anwar said he has asked the Cabinet to look through the Auditor-General’s report and what was highlighted involving their respective ministries.

“The ministers will announce their findings at the appropriate time and (their findings) will be presented at the next parliamentary sitting,” he said.

Anwar also said there were ongoing discussions on appointing more judges for the Sabah and Sarawak High Courts.

This is subject to the respective governors and the King’s assent.
