Thomas Cup badminton heroes feted at Istana Negara

The King and Queen express their highest appreciation for the players' great service and contribution to the country.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Members of Malaysia’s 1967 Thomas Cup-winning badminton team were feted at a tea reception at Istana Negara yesterday.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, and Raja Permaisuri Agong, Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, expressed the highest appreciation for their great service and contribution to the country.

The team members present were Yew Cheng Hoe, Billy Ng Seow Meng, Tan Yee Khan, Teh Kew San and Tan Aik Huang.

Also present were two former national Uber Cup badminton players from the 50s and 70s, Jean Moey and Sylvia Ng, as well as 1976 Thomas Cup badminton player James Selvaraj Joseph.

Veteran sports journalists such as Fauzi Omar, Yong Soo Heong, George Das, Lazarus Rokk and Johnson Fernandez were also in attendance.

Malaysia won the Thomas Cup for the fourth time at the 1967 tournament, held at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, after defeating hosts Indonesia 6-3 in the final.
