Highway operator Prolintas said the woman agreed to settle on the spot. She had accumulated an outstanding balance of RM275.65 in toll charges that she had avoided paying in the past.
The woman was stopped at a toll plaza on the Ampang–Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway recently after she had been found to have avoided paying toll 45 times, Prolintas said on Twitter.
Motoring writer Paul Tan noted that the vehicle was an older generation model, to which a Twitter user responded by mocking the driver for possibly being a stingy rich person, while another said: “Older model, maybe second-hand? Not so rich, this sister”.
A spokesman for Prolintas urged highway users to regard today’s action as a warning. “Don’t emulate this immoral act”, he posted, and reminded highway users that by evading tolls they were not only trespassing but also endangering other vehicles.
Toll evasion usually happens when vehicles tailgate those in front of them to pass through before the boom gate descends.
Evaders who are caught face the prospect of a fine of between RM2,000 and RM5,000 if charged and convicted.
