PETALING JAYA:
The deputy director of a public hospital in Perlis has pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of defrauding frontliners who served during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Norhisham Hassan, 44, entered the plea before judge Norsalha Hamzah in the sessions court in Kangar today.

Norhisham, who serves at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah, is accused of defrauding 10 frontliners by tricking them into believing they had received a one-off allowance from the Perlis government.

The allowance of RM400 was given to frontliners in Perlis who served during the pandemic.

According to a Berita Harian report, Norhisham allegedly duped each victim to sign a document confirming that they had received their allowance.

The offence was allegedly committed at the hospital between April 27 and 29 last year.

The charges were framed under Sections 415 and 417 of the Penal Code.

Deputy public prosecutor Rehab Abdul Shukur prosecuted, while Norhisham was unrepresented.

Rehab proposed that Norhisham be allowed bail of RM5,000 for each charge and to report to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission office in Kangar every month.

However, Norhisham appealed to the court to reduce her bail as she had other commitments, pointing out that her husband’s income as an operations assistant was relatively small.

The court ordered Norhisham to pay RM4,000 in one surety for each charge.

Case management has been fixed for Feb 7.
