Ho, ho, ho, Alfred spreads joy through his music again

The blind musician has released two new albums, including a Christmas compilation, to help raise funds for his medical treatment.

Alfred Ho says his love for music blossomed at a young age.
KUALA LUMPUR:
Music is the soundtrack of blind musician Alfred Ho’s life and his passion simply won’t allow him to stay retired despite his deteriorating health.

His love for music blossomed at a young age – he would drum on tables and chairs with his hands whenever he heard music blasting from his neighbour’s radio.

“I would imagine I was a great musician, even stringing a few rubber bands on a tin,” he said.

Later, a schoolmate inspired Ho to learn how to play the guitar.

“I enjoyed listening to him play so he taught me a few chords. Then I slowly branched out on my own and took up singing as well,” he told FMT.

For the most part, Ho is a self-taught singer, guitarist, harmonicist and yodeler. He first made his name in 1971 when he appeared on RTM’s Bakat TV programme.

He has been performing ever since in pubs, at corporate events and on special occasions. He even made an appearance on Asia’s Got Talent in 2017.

In 2019, he decided to call it a day because he started losing his hearing. He also suffers from hypertension, diabetes, and prostate and liver problems.

But Ho’s retirement did not last long, he made a comeback on May 13 this year at Damansara City Mall for the “Relive Sweet Memories at Comeback Performance” with The Artisans Haven.

Alfred Ho has released a number of albums over the years.

“I will play music until I draw my last breath because music is in my blood so I just cannot retire,” he said.

“Even though I have not fully recovered my hearing, I believe I can still do it. I hope I can raise some funds to treat my health.”

Ho has launched two new albums featuring covers of oldies and Christmas songs priced at RM30 each. Proceeds from the sales will go to his medical treatment and his music career.
