PETALING JAYA:
Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has come under fire from social media users for launching a flood relief mission to the east coast this morning.

Netizens said launching the relief mission only incurred unnecessary costs, and the money used to organise such an event should be channelled to the relief efforts instead.

Saifuddin flagged off the ministry’s relief mission to Machang and Tanah Merah in Kelantan, aided by Yayasan Foodbank Malaysia, from the ministry’s offices in Putrajaya.

Top ministry officials were seen flagging off a convoy of vehicles with liveries pasted on all aid packets and boxes.

“How many thousand was spent to make the backdrop, Saifuddin? It is a tragedy, no need for launches. Read the room,” @thatsmyfullname tweeted.

Firdaus Abd Hanan recalled the event being reminiscent of government events in the late 1990s, saying the government must understand people’s sentiments before going big.

Azay Azmi tweeted that the aid items should have been sent directly to flood-hit areas. “There are people trapped without electricity and food for five to six days. The federal and state governments must be quicker.”

“They know this is inappropriate but want to be saboteurs. PH leaders should be aware of such attempts. And learn to say no,” @PirateKing9290 tweeted.

@f15teen15 tweeted: “However much budget was allocated for this ‘mission’, it could have been budget + RM5,000 extra if this launch party didn’t happen.”

@Injang_Nation said the present government has yet to learn from a similar faux pas involving former ministers Faizal Azumu and Rina Harun. “This is ammo for the opposition and even your own supporters are disgusted,” he tweeted.

Earlier, Saifuddin flagged off the delivery of 1,000 food baskets to Kelantan, adding that aid to Terengganu will be sent in the upcoming phase.

The basket contains necessities such as grains, bread, beverages and biscuits worth RM100 each. They are to be sent through the police, Rela, the immigration department and the National Anti Drug Agency (AADK).
