The Johor state assembly speaker and Umno Supreme Council member was commenting on the Dewan Rakyat sittings on Monday and Tuesday, saying he was embarrassed by the unruly behaviour of some of the MPs.

“Previously, I was on the inside, and now I’m watching from the outside,” Puad, the Batu Pahat MP from March 2008 to May 2013, said in a Facebook post. “I now see the terrible behaviour of the MPs, screaming and calling each other ‘monkeys’.

“Should this even be tolerated? The public who are tuning in to MPs debating are also turned off by their behaviour.”

Puad pointed out that many of the MPs are lawyers and former judges.

“But when they’re in Parliament, they’re screaming loudly and disobeying the Speaker’s instructions.

“So, should the rules governing Parliament be amended to be stricter? If the anti-hopping law can be enacted, then perhaps it’s appropriate for the Standing Orders to be amended, too,” he said.

He said this may include disallowing other MPs from interjecting while an MP is speaking, adding that such a provision already exists in the Johor state assembly rules.

This, he added, would allow MPs to debate and air their views without disruption.
