He said the new “unity package” internet plan is the result of a collaboration among the main telecommunication companies, Celcom-Digi, Maxis and YTL.
Fahmi said the package was developed for those in the bottom 40 (B40) group, youths and the elderly.
“This package is a prepaid mobile internet package that will be offered at a price of RM30 for 30GB of data for a six-month period.
“This means that with only RM5 a month, users can enjoy internet and telecommunication services with a speed of 3Mbps,” he said at a press conference.
According to Fahmi, the 30GB of data would cover calls and chat services as well as online applications for daily activities such as shopping, internet banking and others.
He also said the 3Mbps internet speed for this package was triple the 1Mbps offered by the Keluarga Malaysia package for teenagers and students.
The Keluarga Malaysia package was only valid for 90 days at a price of RM30 but the unity package would be valid for 180 days.
Fahmi said the mobile internet package was a basic package and that it was up to telcos to offer additional services.
He said his ministry’s priority was not only reducing the prices of telecommunication and broadband packages to ease the cost of living for the people, but also to improve these services.
“It’s pointless if the services offered are cheaper and more advanced if there is no network,” he said.
