KUALA LUMPUR:
Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul said that MPs can choose not to wear neckties when they attend tomorrow’s Dewan sitting in formal suits.

The leniency in the dress code was announced following requests by MPs.

“There is a suggestion that I exempt those who are wearing suits from wearing neckties. You can wear a baju Melayu or a suit, but a necktie is not needed. It is (only) an option,” he said.

The leniency in the dress code appears to emulate the relaxed style of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who has been seen wearing formal suits at government events but without neckties.

The practice was soon emulated by Cabinet members and top civil servants at meetings with Anwar. On Friday, he attended meetings dressed in baju Melayu and sandals, which drew comments from social media users.
