Early voting for Padang Serai, Tioman takes place tomorrow

A total of 319 police personnel - 76 in Padang Serai and 243 in Tioman - are expected to cast their ballots.

The polling centres for the Padang Serai and Tioman seats will open at 8am tomorrow.
KUALA LUMPUR:
A total of 76 early voters comprising police personnel will cast their ballots tomorrow for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat in Kedah while the Tioman state seat, in Pahang, involves 243 policemen.

In a statement, Election Commission (EC) secretary Ikmalrudin Ishak said early voting for Padang Serai will take place at the Kulim district police headquarters’ (IPD) multi-purpose hall from 8am to 2pm.

As for the Tioman state seat, he said early voting would take place at the Rompin IPD, from 8am to 5pm, as well as the Tekek police station in Pulau Tioman, from 8am to 12pm.

“The EC advises those who are Covid-19 positive to contact the district health officer to facilitate their early voting process.

“The early voting process will also be observed by agents of the candidates,” he said adding that the process at selected voting centres would also be streamed live via the EC’s Facebook page.

Ikmalrudin said the ballot boxes would be kept in police station lockups and the counting of ballot papers would be conducted on Dec 7 starting at 4pm at the designated counting stations.

The EC also advised early voters to check their voting information at https://mysprsemak.spr.gov.my or by contacting the EC hotline at 03-88927018 or 03-88880040 or via the MySPR Semak application.

The contest for the Padang Serai parliamentary seat will see a six-cornered fight involving Sofee Razak of Pakatan Harapan (PH), Azman Nasrudin (Perikatan Nasional), Hamzah Rahman (Pejuang), C Sivaraj (Barisan Nasional), Bakhri Hashim (Warisan), and an independent, Sreanandha Rao.

However, Warisan had announced that it would not take part in the election, but the party logo would still appear on the ballot paper, as the nomination was accepted by the EC.

Sivaraj has also withdrawn from the race, as BN gives way for PH to try and retain the seat it won in the 2018 general election (GE14).

Meanwhile, the Tioman seat will witness a five-cornered fight between Nor Idayu Hashim of PN, Johari Hussain (BN), Osman A Bakar (Pejuang), Sulaiman Bakar (independent) and Fadzli Ramli (PH).

Fadzli is also making way for the BN candidate to increase the latter’s chances of winning, but his name will still be on the ballot papers.

Voting for Padang Serai and Tioman will take place on Dec 7.
