“Permatang Pauh is Anwar’s legacy. Hopefully, he will look into the constituency’s needs,” Fawwaz told reporters yesterday.
Anwar was the Permatang Pauh MP for six terms. He first won the seat in 1982. His wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, and daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar, have also served as its MPs.
In the recent general election (GE15), Fawwaz defeated Nurul Izzah and candidates from Barisan Nasional and Pejuang in a four-cornered fight.
On his victory, considered one of the biggest upsets in GE15, Fawwaz said he believed voters wanted an MP who was around more often.
“We know it is Anwar Ibrahim’s family stronghold. But voters wanted an MP who was around for them. Some also wanted change,” said the PAS man.
On a separate matter, Fawwaz denied claims that Perikatan Nasional had used TikTok to slander its rivals.
He said PAS, as a PN coalition partner, had stated that it would not abuse the platform to slander others as it was against Islamic teachings.
“We detest content that has elements of provocation and slander,” he said in commenting on TikTok videos claiming that Pakatan Harapan had a Christian agenda.
PN’s critics have linked the coalition to the videos, but Fawwaz said it had nothing to do with them.
