GRS will join my unity govt, says PM

This will give Anwar Ibrahim’s government a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also says the Cabinet will be downsized.
PETALING JAYA:
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has agreed to join the unity government, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

At a press conference at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya, Anwar said this meant that his government would have a two-thirds majority in Dewan Rakyat.

He said this was conveyed by GRS chairman and Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor.

“This will strengthen the nation’s political stability, allowing the government to focus on efforts (in tackling more pressing issues),” he said.

Anwar also gave an assurance the Cabinet will be downsized, but did not elaborate.

A minimum of 148 MPs is required for the government to command a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.

Yesterday, Anwar said his unity government comprised Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and Gabungan Parti Sarawak, with support from MPs from Muda, Warisan and Parti Bangsa Malaysia.

This gives Anwar the support of 139 MPs. With GRS joining the government, Anwar would have the backing of 145 MPs.

Two independent MPs and one from Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) are said to be GRS-friendly. Their support would give Anwar a two-thirds majority.
