Former Anwar associate Sidek Baba dies at 76

Sidek was an associate of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the youth movement Abim but later became an Anwar critic.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Educationist Sidek Baba has died at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre tonight at the age of 76.

His death was confirmed by his son, Izzudin, in a Facebook posting, Bernama reported.

Sidek, 76, was born in Kampung Pulau, Masjid Tanah, Melaka.

He was a professor of education at the International Islamic University of Malaysia, and became a deputy rector from 1994 to 2002. He was a recipient of the National Maulidur Rasul Perdana Award 2009 and was appointed as a member of the National Education Advisory Council in 2010.

Sidek was regarded as an old associate of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim from the time they were in the youth movement Abim. However, in later years he split with Anwar and became a fierce critic, according to Utusan Malaysia.
