Selangor state assembly speaker Ng Suee Lim said this would ensure that elected representatives remain loyal to their respective parties and carried out the people’s mandate responsibly.

He was quoted by Berita Harian as saying that the motion was tabled by Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari yesterday and debated by over 15 assemblymen before it was passed today.

“The people have elected them, so it’s their duty to serve the people. At the same time, this enactment will guarantee political stability,” Ng said.

The Dewan Rakyat and Dewan Negara passed amendments to the Federal Constitution to prevent party-hopping by MPs on July 28 and Aug 9, respectively.

The law was gazetted on Sept 6 after the King gave his assent to the constitutional amendment on Aug 31.
