Zambry said BN was aware of several statements issued by component parties which had gone viral in social media, though he did not elaborate.

He maintained that any proposal submitted during BN Supreme Council meetings will be finalised by the council, according to its constitution.

“We advise all parties to preserve the solidarity and spirit of unity that has long been established in BN to ensure the wellbeing of component parties and its members,” he said in a statement today.

“BN holds to the principle of mutual respect in handling any issue that surfaces. Therefore, the manner in which we issue statements must not cause any misunderstanding.

“This includes matters discussed in BN’s Supreme Council meetings.”

Yesterday, MCA’s secretary-general, Chong Sin Woon, called on BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down over a letter to the King stating the coalition’s support for Anwar Ibrahim as prime minister.

Chong also revealed that a proposal had been submitted to the BN Supreme Council for Zahid’s deputy, Mohamad Hasan, to replace him in the post.

Zahid, the Umno president, faced numerous calls to resign following BN’s dismal performance in the general election, in which the former ruling coalition only won 30 seats. Pakatan Harapan secured 82 seats and Perikatan Nasional 73.

Among those who have called for Zahid’s resignation are Umno leaders Khairy Jamaluddin, Shahril Hamdan, Noh Omar and Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
