PH and PN ahead, BN suffers a drubbing

Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional are the two biggest blocs, with Barisan Nasional trailing far behind.

PETALING JAYA:
Pakatan Harapan and Perikatan Nasional have become the biggest blocs in the new Dewan Rakyat, while Barisan Nasional suffered a drubbing, losing 11 seats in the general election yesterday.

However, no party has won enough seats on its own to cross the threshold of 112 seats needed to form a government.

PH won 82 seats, the largest number among all parties, including one seat from Muda and 5 from Sarawak DAP.

PN was close behind at 73, including 22 seats won under the PAS banner. The coalition has made big gains since the previous election when they commanded only 46 seats in the old Dewan Rakyat.

Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Pejuang party lost all its four seats from the previous election, with Mahathir and his son Mukhriz among the casualties.

Other parties to suffer losses were Parti Bangsa Malaysia, left with one seat from 6 previously; Warisan (3) after losing four seats; and Parti Bersatu Sabah and Parti Sarawak Bersatu which both lost their sole seats.

With the results of 219 seats declared at 5am, this is the state of the parties:

Pakatan Harapan (with Muda) 82
Perikatan Nasional 73
Barisan Nasional 30
Gabungan Parti Sarawak 22
Gabungan Rakyat Sabah 6
Warisan 3
Parti Bangsa Malaysia 1
Independent 2
Total seats in Dewan Rakyat 222
Number of results declared 219
Seats needed for a simple majority 112
