In a statement, the Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said party leaders and heads of coalitions will be asked to propose a prime ministerial candidate to Istana Negara by 2pm tomorrow.
This comes as the general election (GE15) saw no party win sufficient seats to form the government on its own.
Pakatan Harapan, together with Muda, have the highest number of seats with 82.
This was followed by Perikatan Nasional (73), Barisan Nasional (30), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (22), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (6), Warisan (3), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (1), Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (1) and two independents.
In the statement, Fadil said Istana Negara received the official results of yesterday’s election from the Election Commission at 1.15pm, with the document submitted by EC chairman Abdul Ghani Salleh clearly stating that no single political party has the simple majority that would allow it to form the next government.
“In light of that, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, has asked Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to ask party leaders and heads of coalitions that have the most seats to inform Istana Negara of the coalition that they have agreed upon to form the next government,” he said.
“The party and coalition heads will be asked by the Speaker to inform (him) of the coalition that has been agreed upon, as well as to propose the name of a MP who has the majority support in the Dewan Rakyat as a candidate for prime minister to Istana Negara before 2pm on Monday, Nov 21.
“In line with Article 40 (2)(a) and Article 43 (2)(a) of the Federal Constitution, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decision to appoint a prime minister is final.”
In the statement, Fadil said the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had advised the public and political parties to abide by and respect the process of democracy and accept the results of GE15.
He also said Malaysia needs a stable government which has the authority and integrity to safeguard the welfare of the people and drive the country forward, adding that Malaysians should pray that the process of forming the new government would be smooth.
