In the first official result declared by the Election Commission, Ahmad Johnie Zawawi of GRS won re-election to the parliamentary seat with a bigger majority of 14,662 votes.
GPS candidates scored four other victories as results were announced in quick succession this evening.
Hanifah Taib, with 21,733 votes, was declared the winner in Mukah, defeating Pakatan Harapan’s Abdul Jalil in a straight fight, by a 15,686 vote majority.
Soon after, the EC announced that Rodiyah Sapiee had won in Batang Sadong, Henry Sum Agong in Lawas, and Dr Richard Rapu in Lawas.
Ahmad Johnie’s victory in Igan was the second time he defeated a Pakatan Harapan candidate. His opponent, Hud Andri, managed only 1,162 votes.
In 2018, when Ahmad won for the first time, his PH rival Andri Zulkarnaen Hamden polled only 2,043 votes.
When met by reporters, Johnie thanked voters for their support and promised to bring in more development to the constituency.
He said he had always prioritised education in Igan, labelling it a very important agenda. “The future of Igan hinges on an educated generation.”
GPS is believed to have commanding leads in at least 12 of the 31 parliamentary seats being contested in Sarawak.
