PETALING JAYA:
Despite episodes of heavy rain and fear of flash floods, residents of Taman Sri Muda in Shah Alam say they will go out to vote tomorrow.

Entrepreneur Sharmini Sharine, 45, said she is eager to fulfil her duties as a voter.

“We need to vote as it is our responsibility to pick a people-centric government. We are hoping for good weather tomorrow,” she said.

Sharmini said last year’s floods were so bad that her parents were stranded for three days.

She said they were traumatised to the point they do not want to leave the house when it rains.

The floods that hit Taman Sri Muda last year submerged many parts of the area for days, resulting in the death of more than a dozen people and causing millions of ringgit in damage to homes and businesses.

Another resident, who only wanted to be known as Jackie, 49, said he is going out to vote regardless of the weather because he wants to support PKR president Anwar Ibrahim to become the prime minister.

However, Jackie hopes the local authorities can implement flood mitigation measures to make voting safer tomorrow.

“The first floods happened in 1995. I’ve been living here for 30 years and I hope they can finally do something about it,” he said.

Lee Chee Keong, 60, says people should not use fear of floods as an excuse not to vote.

“As Malaysians, they must go out and vote,” he said, adding that he will support an MP who has the interest of Sri Muda residents in mind.

Some, however, are not in the mood for elections.

Dinosh Kumar, 18, said the polls are the least of his concerns as he is worried about flooding.

“I’m worried about another round of floods as we just finished fixing our house after the damage from last year,” he said, adding he has yet to decide if he will go out to vote.
