Rivers in 5 states exceed danger level

The department of irrigation and drainage said rivers in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Kelantan and Sarawak recorded dangerous levels as of this afternoon.

Water levels at rivers have breached the danger threshold in five states, says the department of irrigation and drainage (DID).

According to the DID website, rivers in Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Melaka, Kelantan and Sarawak all recorded dangerous levels as of this afternoon.

In Selangor, Sungai Selangor in Kuala Selangor recorded a water level of 8.55m as of 3pm. Sungai Binjai, Klang, exceeded the danger level with a reading of 4.26m while Sungai Balak, Hulu Langat, had a reading of 38.13m.

The water level at Sungai Linggi in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, was 3.35m at 3pm.

In Melaka, Sungai Melaka in the Alor Gajah district had a reading of 12.07m while the stretch of the river at Melaka Tengah also exceeded the danger level (2.53m).

Sungai Golok (9.92m) in Pasir Mas, Kelantan; and Sungai Batang Baram in Long Jegan (12.66m), Sungai Batang Baram in Long Teru (7.73m) and Sungai Batang Baram in Marudi (3.13m) in Miri, Sarawak, also had readings that exceeded the danger threshold.

In a warning at 3pm today, the DID warned there was a chance of flash floods occurring in Johor, Terengganu, Kedah, Sabah, Sarawak and Selangor in the next 12 hours.

According to the Southeastern Asia-Oceania Flash Flood Guidance System and DID flood modelling, there was a likelihood of this happening if there was significant rainfall.

DID identified some of the places at risk of flooding. They include Batu Pahat, Johor Bahru, Pontian and Kota Tinggi (Johor); Dungun (Terengganu); Kota Setar, Kuala Muda and Yan (Kedah); Papar and Tuaran (Sabah); Kuching, Lundu, Samarahan, Asiajaya and Sebuyau (Sarawak); and Klang, Kuala Langat, Kuala Selangor, Petaling and Sepang (Selangor).
