C4 will just move ‘goal post’, says Yeo on conflict of interest claims

Yeo Bee Yin reiterates that she has remained professional when carrying out her duties as an elected representative.

DAP’s Yeo Bee Yin said voters should judge her performance from her track record as a former minister and MP.
SERI KEMBANGAN:
DAP’s Yeo Bee Yin said that an anti-graft group who claimed her candidacy in the general election (GE15) represented a conflict of interest, would never be content with her response to such allegations.

“No matter how much I answer, they will shift to another ‘goal post’,” she told FMT when met at a ceramah here.

Yeo, who is contesting the Puchong parliamentary seat, was responding to claims by the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4 Center) that DAP nominated Yeo for a parliamentary seat in an area where her in-laws possess “vast business interests”.

She said that she had been married to IOI Properties Group Bhd CEO Lee Yeow Seng for four years, and that she had remained professional when carrying out her duties as an elected representative.

“You can look at the Parliament Hansard, and the decisions I’ve made as a minister.

“Have I ever done anything that C4 Center suddenly assumed that I would do?”

Yeo also said that voters would be able to differentiate between a parliamentary constituency and that of the name of an area.

She believed voters were able to judge her performance from her track record as a former minister and MP.

“I’ll leave it to the voters to decide by looking at my track record, and me as a person.”

Previously, C4 Center claimed that Yeo’s candidacy for the Puchong seat was a conflict of interest of “major proportions” because she is the spouse of one of the country’s key business leaders.

In a statement, C4 Center said IOI Group has stakes in “massive land areas” across the Puchong constituency, adding that its main investment properties include IOI Mall Puchong, IOI Boulevard Puchong, Sheraton Puchong, the Puchong Financial Corporate Centre, Palm Garden Hotel, Palm Garden Golf Club and the IOI Palm Villa Golf and Country Resort.

Yeo said none of these areas were in the Puchong constituency, and called on C4 to check its facts.

C4 reiterated its concerns, and asked Yeo how she would vote in Parliament on matters that did not serve the interests of IOI Group, as well as how she would shape budget debates concerning the company and its stakeholders, among others.
