KUALA LUMPUR:
A former AmBank banker told the High Court in Najib Razak’s 1MDB trial that she never received any funds from the former prime minister or Low Taek Jho during the time she worked with the bank.

Joanna Yu, who was the bank’s former relationship manager, said this when questioned by ad hoc prosecutor Gopal Sri Ram.

She also said Nik Faisal Ariff Kamil, who was tasked with the management of Najib’s accounts, never gave her any money.

Yu had previously said she met Jho Low, as the fugitive businessman is commonly known, in 2007, when she was assigned to handle a loan for Majestic Masterpiece Sdn Bhd, a company he controlled.

She added it was Low who told her that Najib wanted to open accounts with AmBank.

The High Court previously heard that Najib opened two accounts – a savings account ending with 481, and a current account ending with 694 – both on Jan 13, 2011. The accounts were closed on Aug 26, 2013.

Three other accounts – ending with 880, 906 and 898 – were opened on July 31, 2013 and closed on March 9, 2015.

Yu had also told the court that Najib never complained to AmBank with respect to her handling of his accounts.

She said Najib had in 2019 filed a suit against her for alleged negligence in disclosing details of his accounts to an unauthorised person.

“The case was struck out (by the Court of Appeal),” said Yu, when asked by Sri Ram over the lawsuit’s status.

Yu added that Low had once referred to Najib as “OP” in a Blackberry Messenger text she received, an acronym which was intended to refer to “Optimus Prime”, a protagonist in the popular Transformers cartoon/movie series.

The message sent on Nov 26, 2014, which she read out in court, said: “OP says likely to close accounts by December 2014.”

Sri Ram: In your mind, who was Optimus Prime?

Yu: Datuk Seri (Najib).

Najib is standing trial on 25 counts of money laundering and abuse of power over the alleged misuse of 1MDB funds amounting to RM2.28 billion deposited into his AmBank accounts between February 2011 and December 2014.

The hearing before Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah continues.
