PETALING JAYA:
An anti-graft group has reiterated its concern about the link between businesses and politics after Puchong election candidate Yeo Bee Yin, who is married to a scion of the IOI Group, had dismissed the group’s fears of a conflict of interest.

The group said that while the properties mentioned in its report on Yeo’s alleged conflict of interest were not currently within the Puchong constituency, they had been before the seat was delineated in 2018.

Yeo, of DAP, is the Pakatan Harapan candidate for Puchong. She was formerly MP for Bakri, Johor, and was minister for energy, science, technology, environment and climate change in the PH government of 2018-2020.

She is married to Lee Yeow Seng, chief executive officer of IOI Properties Group Bhd, whose late father Lee Shin Cheng founded IOI Group Bhd, one of the country’s largest developers and plantation cultivators.

C4 said IOI Properties had a “major presence” in neighbouring constituencies and in other parts of the Klang Valley, and asked how Yeo would vote in Parliament on matters that do not serve the interests of IOI Group.

The group also asked how Yeo would shape budget debates if companies associated with IOI Group would be unfavourably affected by government programmes, and how she would vote on environmental-related policies, including those related to property development.

The group also asked whether Yeo would discuss social benefits for employees and an appropriate minimum wage while in Parliament.

C4 had said earlier today that IOI Group has stakes in “massive land areas” across the Puchong constituency, with its main investment properties including IOI Mall Puchong, IOI Boulevard Puchong, Sheraton Puchong and the Puchong Financial Corporate Centre.

However, Yeo pointed out that the properties were not within the Puchong constituency, and that the seat does not include certain areas in Puchong. She said many parliamentary seats bore names that did not reflect the named localities.

IOI Mall Puchong, IOI Boulevard Puchong, Sheraton Puchong, the Puchong Financial Corporate Centre are currently located within the Kinrara state seat.

In 2018, the area where these properties are located became part of the Kinrara (state) and Subang (parliament) constituencies in a redelineation exercise. They had been within the Seri Serdang (state) and Puchong (parliament) constituencies before the boundaries were redrawn.
