Fadillah hopes to settle ‘unfinished business’ as works minister again

He sets his sights on a new term in the Cabinet to complete a highway network programme and bring about a free-flow system on toll highways.

Two-term works minister Fadillah Yusof hopes to return to the Cabinet after this month’s general election.
PETALING JAYA:
After two terms as works minister, Fadillah Yusof is hopeful he will return to the ministry after the Nov 19 general election to settle some “unfinished business” on highway development.

“For example, we have plans for a highway network development programme” in which all infrastructure is planned to meet future traffic needs.

“Another plan close to my heart is the introduction of a multi-lane free flow (toll system) for highways which will eliminate the need for toll booths,” he said.

He also has more plans to improve traffic congestion and public transportation in Petra Jaya, where he is seeking re-election as a Gabungan Parti Sarawak candidate. He has been MP for Petra Jaya since 2004.

He said the development of roads had not kept pace with the increase in the number of vehicles, which he attributes to the people’s improving economic condition.

Apart from improving public transport by engaging with the various city and municipal councils in his constituency, he also wants to explore better technologies for managing traffic in a bid to reduce congestion.

Less congestion would lead to less pollution and fewer “stressful people on the road”, he said.

“Traffic congestion affects people’s quality of life as it’s stressful to be caught in traffic,” he said. “Being stressed will affect people’s health and reduce their productivity, so these are areas we need to look into.

He said public transport must be more effective and affordable, so that more people will use it.
