TAIPING:
Former Pokok Assam assemblyman Leow Thye Yih, who quit DAP yesterday, will defend his state seat and contest the Taiping parliamentary seat as an independent candidate.

According to China Press, Leow urged Taiping voters to support him and give him a chance to do more for the constituency.

He also told the Chinese daily that he quit DAP yesterday out of “desperation” in order to stand in Taiping in hopes of bringing greater development to the area.

However, he said he did not blame DAP for not nominating him as a candidate for the election.

He also thanked his former party for choosing him to contest the Aulong and then the Pokok Assam state seats in the past two general elections.

With a multi-cornered fight shaping up in Taiping and Pokok Assam, Leow hoped voters would consider candidates’ performance in the area instead of voting based on party lines.

As a local Taiping boy, he pledged to do more for the town by raising the standard of living there.
