In a statement, the economic affairs minister said he made this decision after being advised by his doctor, adding that his current health status would not allow him to serve his constituents effectively.
Mustapa, also known as Tok Pa, said he has informed Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin on this decision.
He thanked the people of Jeli for electing him as their MP since 1995, expressing gratitude for entrusting him with representing them in the Dewan Rakyat.
Mustapa was first elected Jeli MP in 1995, but lost to PAS’ Apandi Mohamad in 1999. He then regained the seat for Barisan Nasional in 2004 and defended it for three more terms.
He had won the seat on a BN ticket in 2018 but quit the party for Bersatu in September that year.
He has served in various ministerial portfolios, from entrepreneur development to economic affairs, finance, higher education, agriculture and international trade.
