Today, their 1.6ha organic garden received 1,200 mushroom-growing kits to add to the rich variety of produce grown by the residents.
The grey oyster mushroom-growing kits were provided by the federal territories ministry through its Titipan Kasih Wilayah Persekutuan Hijau programme.
This programme is part of the ministry’s Local Agenda 21 (LA21) initiative to support community gardens in the city.
Federal territories ministry secretary-general Rosida Jaafar, who presented the residents with the mushroom-growing kits, said she was happy that residents of all ages were actively involved in looking after their community garden.
“As we can see, many residents here are seniors, so the younger generation will ensure the continuity of the garden,” she said.
Rosida said that aside from serving as a green lung for the residents, their garden also helped ease the living cost of residents who harvested the vegetables and fruits.
“We will continue to support community farming as it is in line with the Kuala Lumpur carbon-free city initiative,” she said.
